2009 BRC Exporee
Despite a little rain, (OK, at times a lot of rain), the 2009 Exporee was a big success. Troop 339 was well represented with 15 scouts in attendance, and 4 adults. During the Exporee, scouts had the opportunity to participate in many fun and exciting activities ranging from SCUBA to rocketry.
Late Saturday afternoon, Troop 339 scouts had the special opportunity to meet the Blue Ridge Council’s 100th Anniversary Honorary Chairman, former South Carolina Governor and US Secretary of Education Dick Riley. Council President Russell Smart and Exporee Chairman Dan Atkinson brought the Governor to our campsite. Later in the evening, the Governor addressed all of the scouts and leaders at the campfire ceremony.
New Eagle Scout
Congratulations to our newest Eagle Scout – Miles B. Also thanks to everyone who help at his Eagle Court of Honor. We had a great turnout, and I know Miles and his family appreciate the support.
Camp Old Indian (COI) 2009
We’re now less than three weeks away from summer camp. Cost for camp this year will be $205. Final payments were due on May 18th. If you were unable to make that deadline, please let me know. We will be holding a COI Parents meeting on Monday night, 06/01/2009.
2010 National Jamboree
The number of available spaces continues to get smaller. Recruiting at the Exporee added several scouts and these efforts will continue through summer the summer at COI. Troop 339 continues to be well represented with twelve members, but we would like to have even more scouts attend this 100th anniversary celebration. If you have not signed up and think you might like to go, now is the time to make the commitment. If you have questions or need additional information including financial assistance, please contact me as soon as possible.
Fundraising
We’ve had many great fundraisers over the past year. We’d like to thank Mr. Hill, Mrs. Bagwell, Mrs. Fleck, and The Men of the Church, (our Sponsor Organization), for their leadership and support of these efforts. Scouts who participate in these various fundraisers will benefit greatly by earning money in their personal scout accounts. These funds can be used for payment for things like summer camp, High Adventure Trips, Jamboree, uniforms, scout books, registration, and routine campout fees. If you have questions concerning your account, please contact either Mrs. Fleck or myself.
Uniforms
As is our normal practice, we do not require full uniforms at meetings between Memorial Day and Labor Day. We do ask that scouts continue to wear uniform pants and a scout t-shirt (class-“B”). I would also remind everyone that open toed shoes are not permitted at scout meetings for safety reasons.
Troop Gear
Parents and Scouts – We’re missing a backpack. It’s an external frame black pack with red trim. It’s one of the “BSA Best” packs. It was probably borrowed and just hasn’t made its way back to the scout room. Please look around and see if you might have it. We’re fortunate to have equipment like this to “loan out”, but need to make sure it’s returned for future use. Thanks!
Order of the Arrow
We will be holding OA elections tomorrow night, 6/01/2009, during our troop meeting. To be eligible for OA Election, a scout must be of first class rank, be active in the troop having at least 15 days and nights of camping within the past two years.
